The Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG) of John Deere in Kaiserslautern develops future trends and technologies in the area of mobile agricultural and construction machinery in cooperation with different research centers. In addition, ISG develops and sells products and services in the area of precision farming using global satellite based navigation systems (GNSS), automated steering systems, machine automation, sensor technologies, telematic system solutions, web applications as well as apps for mobile devices to optimize farming processes and to support decision making.

In order to develop autonomous / highly automated guidance solutions, we rely on several development & simulation frameworks to validate our design. Our Guidance & Automation team at Kaiserslautern is looking for a motivated student to join our innovative team and help develop an integrated software ‘co-simulation’ framework. This opportunity will expose the student to state-of-the-art sensing & vehicle dynamic systems and enhance their understanding of product development. Typical tasks include:

  • Concept development:

  • Problem analysis & literature review

  • Ideate, compare and rate different solution concepts

  • Systems engineering:

  • Definition of system architecture & development environments

  • Integration of different system SW components (simulators, sensing & control algorithms, networking etc.)

  • Attention to timing & scheduling of software systems.

  • Complete assembly of a functional co-simulation

  • Verification & Validation:

  • Test stimuli & performance analysis

  • Automation framework & CI


  • Bachelor or master’s student of Computer Science, Informatik or similar disciplines.

  • Ability to work independently and to understand new subject matter.

  • Good technical understanding and English language skills.

  • Good communication skills and willingness to work in a team.

  • Experience with C++ (Knowledge on OpenCV and Qt is a plus).

  • Windows & Linux programming experience (Multi-core, multi-threaded & GPU programming experience is a plus).

  • Experience in Networking (TCP / IP, UDP etc.).

  • Familiarity with any virtual 3D simulation engines (Unreal, Carla, Unity etc.).

  • Familiarity with MATLAB / Simulink & CAN communication.

  • Familiarity with Agricultural vehicles, implements & practices.

  • Familiarity with revision control tools like: SVN, Hg, GitHub and CI servers is beneficial.
