The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Companys regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule.
Your Responsibilities
As a Part-Time Student-Manufacturing Engineering for John Deere Waterloo Works located in Waterloo, Iowa, you will assist the heat treat department primarily with processing furnace samples to verify process quality.
You will distribute test pieces to the factory floor that will be placed in heat treat trays. Upon completion, you will collect, section, polish and perform metallurgical analyses on test pieces. You will determine if test pieces are within or out of specification and will be required to contact the manufacturing engineer and/or hold the suspect material.
Responsibilities will also include filling out forms for metallurgical analysis requests, submitting daily part audits, reviewing furnace process data to identify root cause of quality issues, data entry and database updates.
Other activities may include:
Process development for heat treatment processes
Assist with creating work instructions for operators
Assist with troubleshooting production process, machine, and quality issues
Provide technical support to the production department for problem solving and quality
improvement
Assist with random part audits
Small project work for the manufacturing engineering staff
Maintain existing laboratory equipment
This position will require daily afternoon/evening work.
What Skills You Need
Ideally you will be pursuing an Associate or Bachelor degree preferably in a technical field; others may apply
Must be registered as a full-time student at a local accredited university (Hawkeye, UNI, Wartburg, etc)
Graduation date of May 2023 or later
Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above
Must be able to commute to the work location on a daily basis
Work 16-20 hours/week during the academic year
Work 35-40 hours/week during the summer semester
Available to work afternoons and evenings
What Makes You Stand Out
Basic knowledge of heat treatment of ferrous metals
Knowledge of material properties and metallurgical analysis
Basic understanding of statistical process control
Demonstrated experience with advanced spreadsheet, VBA, and statistical analysis tools is a plus
Some technical knowledge of manufacturing processes, ability to work with hand tools, polishing equipment and some laboratory equipment, and basic knowledge of spreadsheet applications and database applications
Pursuing a degree in one of the following areas: metallurgical engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering, manufacturing technology, industrial technology, or a related field of study .
